Same Threat Faces Royal Oak If So-Called "Rights" Ordinance Adopted

Group Offers Detroit Free Legal Defense Against Homosexual Activists' Threatened Lawsuit Over City's Boy Scout Support

MIDLAND – A statewide pro-family group Tuesday offered to provide the city of Detroit expert legal defense -- at no cost to taxpayers -- against a lawsuit threatened by homosexual activists upset with Mayor Dennis Archer’s support of the city’s Boy Scout troops.

Homosexual activists Tuesday criticized Archer for accepting the Silver Beaver Award, the Boy Scouts’ highest award for adults, in recognition of the mayor’s service and fund raising for the city’s Scouting program. A spokesman for the Triangle Foundation, a Detroit-based homosexual advocacy group, also condemned Detroit officials for providing city funds to support area Scout troops.

According to Tuesday’s Detroit News, Triangle Foundation executive director Jeff Montgomery threatened "that if Detroit continues to fund the Scouts with public money, his group will take legal action. Detroit has had a clause in its civil rights ordinance since 1974 banning discrimination on the basis of sexual preference. All groups receiving city money have to sign clauses supporting all city laws, Montgomery said." [LINK]

The American Family Association of Michigan Tuesday said the city of Royal Oak faces the same sort of threats against its Scout troops if the city approves a so-called "gay rights" ordinance scheduled for a May 1st vote by residents.

AFA-Michigan President Gary Glenn, in a statement e-mailed to city offices Tuesday afternoon, commended Archer and other city officials for their support of the Scouting program.

"Mr. Mayor, on behalf of what we know is the overwhelming majority of Detroit’s families, we join the Boy Scouts in recognizing your personal activism in support of the Scouting program, and we applaud the city for its support of a cherished program whose values have helped lift many young men, especially disadvantaged youth, to live more successful lives," Glenn wrote.

"The city’s longstanding support for its Scout troops, and through them its young men, sets an important example well beyond the city limits. In recognition of that example, we believe Detroit taxpayers should not be forced to bear the burden alone of defending your worthy stand from assault by homosexual activists seeking to discriminate against the city’s Scout troops for their common sense stand to protect young boys from exposure to adult males who openly engage in homosexual behavior," Glenn wrote.

"Should the Triangle Foundation make good its threat of a discriminatory and punitive lawsuit, the American Family Association of Michigan will provide experienced attorneys -- expert on a national basis in the litigation of matters involving religious freedom and pro-family issues, and free of charge to Detroit taxpayers – to defend the city against any such suit," he wrote.

Glenn, himself an Eagle Scout, whose wife and three sons are involved in the Scouting program, said the statewide pro-family organization is offering to defend the city against legal action "for the greater purpose of helping protect young boys from exposure to harm."

He pointed to scientific data from a study of non-incarcerated child sex offenders which found that adult males who engage in homosexual behavior "sexually molest young boys with an incidence that is occurring five times greater than the molestation of girls." [LINK]

AFA-Michigan this past year has organized public support for Scout troops in Allegan County, Bay City, Mt. Pleasant, and the Plymouth-Canton school district in response to attacks by homosexual activists.
